They don't cost tons of money to keep and you don't need to be home around the clock. If you work, what would your monkey do for enrichment, diaper changes, etc. while at work?   first i see a lot of comments on here about people wanting a monkey and asking how to get one well youre on the best site connect with the people above that are selling and ask about buying a monkey. if they are legit they will have a usda primate breeder license and a us based address and phone number not a p.o box or internet based number like google voice and they wont have any issue with you picking up your baby in person. you should pick up and pay in person always if you send money you are scammed kiss it goodbye. second its ok to feel negatively about humans owning a primate but you cant force your opinions on others. thirdly a simple google search can tell you which states allow primate ownership and which ones dont. lastly stay away from macaques since they are well known to commonly carry the herpes b virus which has no effect on the monkey but is deadly to humans transmittable through a bite or scratch and yes at some point all monkeys will bite or scratch theres no avoiding that but you can alter the monkey and have it spayed or neutered to lessen the likelihood of this happening. monkeys like children need structure and discipline to turn out decent and worthwhile members of society so make sure to establish rules and consequences for breaking said rules. monkeys should always wear diapers inside and have a monkey prrof room or area to play in and a secure area for sleeping. before buying a monkey make sure to google exotic vets in your state and call to make sure they currently treat the type of monkey you are looking to buy because most exotic vets dont see monkeys and even fewer that see monkeys will treat any old world monkey so make sure to call and ask dont assume. be ready to drive perhaps several hours to visit a vet that will see monkeys as they are rare nowadays. monkeys do need constant attention and yes there is some thought required when feeding and they do need things to play with but this really isnt much different than having a human baby except that there are legal restrictions on traveling and they never grow up. just know beforehand that you wouldnt be allowed to visit or even pass through any state that bans monkeys with your primate and they arent allowed in hotels and you wont be allowed to bring your primate back into the country after international travel and also that monkey sitters are like unicorns basically dont exist and thats because monkeys only develop bonds with 1 or 2 people and see everyone else as the enemy so yea just be mindful of that but if youre a single person or maybe a couple living alone in a state that allows monkeys and you dont have kids or travel at all a primate might work for you. a legit marmoset is gonna set you back about $6,000 a spider or squirrel monkey can run about 10 to 12 thousand and capuchins are over 20 thousand dollars now.

  I’ve wanted a monkey for quite awhile, and did a lot of research on macaques mainly, but also capuchins. I do understand the commitment needed to keep a monkey healthy and happy, and the expense involved with doing so. No matter how much I’ve read and studied, it is still impossible to know the reality of it without the experience. There sure seem to be a lot of people giving advice and criticism on something they don’t have experience with. I am not one of them. I have decided to watch monkeys on YouTube instead of owning one, no matter what kind of job raising one I think I could do. If one lived to 40, I would have to live until I was past 90 to ensure the monkey didn’t have to go to a sanctuary or be put down. The chances of that are pretty slim. Getting a monkey at this stage of my life seems really selfish and ultimately unfair for the monkey. I will continue to watch them, and if I’m lucky volunteer at a sanctuary so I can experience them firsthand.

  I've had a Java Macaque and a Pigtail Macaque for 17 years in my life, in my experience I would not recommend more than one at a time. Monkeys live in packs, when you have one, you are in the pack. As the monkey matures into adolescence it will challenge the head of the pack, that was me, they felt they were above my wife when I was around both of them. They would bite and nip at her, especially the female, Molly, Rocky the male Pigtail did as well. You start off with the diapers and toys, but you have to remember, they have hands and can remove anything you put on them they don't want on them. They get into everything, once the Police showed up, Molly was playing with the phone and the operator dispatched the police. Funny explaining that my Monkey did it and have to show them. My plan was to always get them a nice outdoor enclosure, but that never panned out, they ended up having their own room in the house which they pretty much destroyed, and smelled up the whole house, no matter how much you cleaned it, nobody ever came over. They had to be kept in cages almost all the time for their own safety, from each other. If you think they can be left on their own like a dog, you are sorely mistaken! They had their moments, but unless your retired and can spend 24/7 with them, it's not all fun and games like you see on TV. Do your home work and decide if your willing to make such a huge life investment, because their life is in your hands. Having a child, the early years are tough, having a primate is like having a child forever!

  I am sick of hearing people say that a monkey being raised in captivity is cruel. Is a dog being raised in captivity cruel? How about a cat? Most monkeys I have seen being raised in homes, live a great life. They are not threaten by other monkeys in the wild or have there food taken from them. In the wild the smaller ones often dont get to eat because the bigger ones take it from them. Just watch videos of them online in the wild and you will see. There life is Hell from the day they are born. Watch how there on mothers treat them. They live a hell of a lot better life in a home than they ever will in the wild. Most people who say this mess have never even had a monkey. All they know is what they read from a damn pita brochure or online page. BS. I get so tired of hearing this crap. If you dont have or have never had a monkey, DONT SIT and tell crap you know NOTHING about.

I have M.S and with it comes a lot of forgetfulness iwith proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Thankfully that's the only area I forget other than math. I went to college and received my MS in psychology - ABA. So I'm not stupid and take great offense to the insults in this comment Area. I also have two monkeys, Spider monkey is now 7 and capuchin is now 10. They're not nasty critters like some say. Those people are the stupid ones, in fact I'm positive they have very limited knowledge on prime mates of any kind. If you're looking for a monkey just make sure you do your research on them. DO NOT just jump in and get one. They are a lot of work, they also require a lot of your time. We put ours in our will just in case something happens to my husband and myself. You need to make a huge commitment and follow their diets as much as possible. You can give small amounts of human treats, but not much. Monkeys in captivity tend to become diabetic if their diet is not followed close. You can't go anywhere unless your monkeys are welcomed. There's so much, more so research hard. If you decide to get one, I can assure you that if you raise them right, the endless rewards from your monkeys love well be well worth the work. Some idiot on here stated that owning a monkey is no different than owning a person. That's ignorance. Monkeys are animals not humans. That person must believe we came from monkeys, that's disgusting. Watch Misty Flowers monkeys on YouTube, you'll see exactly what's needed to have one.

  I have had two monkey's JJ and BoBo. JJ was a Macaque BoBo a green Guenon. In 2014 I had a heart attack, my daughter was taking care of them but my BoBo died while I was in the hospital. My family was so afraid to tell me at the time and the first thing I ask any of them was how are my babies? When they told me I was inconsolable. That was one of my babies. We still don't know what happened to him he was only 4 years old. Then in 2018, my JJ started throwing up black liquid one morning. I got him to the vet and his sugar level was 700! He was diabetic and I had no idea, he never showed any signs of it. He was given insulin and I was given some to give him later that day. We had been home about an hour and my baby died, he was 10 years old. The loss was almost more than I could bear. They are more than a pet and you have to plan your life around them. I never went anywhere they were my life. Please think long and hard before getting a monkey, yes they are so sweet but they do have their bad days and can be a handful. There are times I think about getting another one but I learned a hard lesson when I lost them.

  I've always wanted a monkey. The older I got and the more studying I did I found out real quick that I probably couldn't afford the vet bills. Housing, food and love would be no problem. I wouldn't need a baby sitter if I went anywhere, I'd take the monkey with me. I wish I was able to volunteer time to spend with monkeys. I wouldn't want anything bigger than a spider monkey. I would want to be able to handle it like it's supposed to be handled. I'm afraid anything bigger than a spider monkey would be to much for me to handle. I live in Alabama and wish I knew of a place close by that needed volunteers. Good luck to those of you that have monkeys. For those of you that don't, do some research it may be more than you want to deal with. They have a long life span, need pretty much constant attention, special diet, at least 3 or 4 vet visits yearly. If anyone needs some volunteer assistance with their monkey let me know. I live in Pell City, Alabama. I'm midway between Birmingham and Oxford Alabama. I-20 is about 2 miles from my house. Y'all enjoy your babies. I will enjoy them in pictures.   Monkeys are NOT pets and what these breeders are doing is cruel beyond words!! PLEASE do some research and learn that this is WRONG!!!! Monkeys need to be wild and free!! Once they mature they will be EXTREMELY difficult to handle and you will have already destroyed their ability to live in the wild! The only way to stop this cruelty is to NOT purchase an animal from him!! He keeps the mother’s locked up in small cages and takes her baby away right after birth. Monkeys are intelligent animals with emotions!! In the wild a mother will die to protect her baby. Who knows what they do to her here when it’s time to take the baby. It’s sickening.   We had a male and female white faced capuchin monkeys when I was a kid. They are VERY expensive to keep healthy the male (Pancho) was very tame and had free range of the house in the afternoon, the female was unapproachable by anyone other than my father. Pancho had the intelligence of a toddler and the house was baby proofed but it didnt stop him. Pancho got along with the dogs, loved to harass them. I enjoyed them but they are a lifetime commitment, have strict rules (I found out the hard way), extremely big time consumers, and expensive as hell. I would love to have Pancho and my Dad back back, but sometime memories are better.

  I have two small infant primates in my home right now. I hear all of you people talking about I don't have much money to buy a monkey but I have lots of love. If you're going to get a monkey you better have lots of money. There is no way out around it. If you don't have thousands of dollars a year to spend on it your better off getting a kid or a cat. Because owning a monkey isn't cheap. They cost more to keep on that it cost to keep it. Cost of diapers, food (fresh fruits and veggies) not the cheap frozen or canned type either. That kind of food makes them sick and isn't good for them because that has to much salt and other chems that causes poor health. You have to buy good and real nutritional supplements. Make sure it has a reg Vet that can take care of primates and I can tell you they are hard to find and if you do fine one they aren't cheap. You have to take it in to see this vet about every 3 months to check on Vit D levels and also have its blood tested to see if it's A1C is still in normal range, So you can look forward to at least $200 to $300 a every three months for Normal Vet bills. If monk get sick that will be even more. For example 6 months ago one of mine got a bad cold from some where and It cost me $621.50 for that once visit, but I also added for his nails to be clipped during that visit too because they needed it and they already had him in there. but that was only like $20.00 so with not the nail trim that visit was 600. Forget about going on a vacation for the next 40 to 50 years. You will never find anyone to babysit and nor will you want anyone else taking care of it that much of an investment. That would be as silly as letting your next door neighbor watching over your brand new Lamborghini. Yea right! They will never grow out of shitting and pissing in their diapers either so you are looking to buying huggies for the rest of yours or its life. Changing piss fulled diapers 3 to 4 times a day and more if it happens to get the shits. Check out the cost of a pack of diapers now. LOL.. They aren't cheap.. For get those weekends you want to sleep late on Saturday mornings or go out to the clubs on a Friday night... Remember, there are no babysitters that you can call at 9 pm... And what I just told you about bring up a monkey... That was the good parts...Then why do I have two of them you ask?? Because I grew up with all sorts of monkeys in my home, I've had about every breed they know if in my home growing up at one time or anther. Both my parents were Vets for San Diego Zoo. They both were Vets for primates and guess who got to take care of the babies when they monkey parents didn't want too. Now I get the honor to do the same job here where I live from our local zoo. I am not a vet but my parents are still well known around the zoo and primate world and the local zoo here knows I know how to take care of them so I get to foster babies from time to time for them and sanctuaries in the area that do not have the room or time to take care of the little bundles of fuzzy joy. It's just something you better think long and hard about and it is not for someone under the age of at least 30 to try to take on taking care of a primate of any kind more less one that can grow as big as a 5 to 6 year old. Like I said I have had primates in our home for 56 years of my 57 years. They do make wonderful companions. Yes I mean companions because they aren't pets. They are like kids, they end up how they were raised. If you didn't make them mind as an infant they will be bad in adulthood. As with a child they need discipline and you can't rule with a light touch either. You have to do what their mothers do to them like in the wild. Sometimes you have to bite the shit out of them or twist that ear tell it screams sometimes so they will know from right from wrong. That's it guys and gals. Something to think long and hard about before you lay down anywhere from 6 to 40 grand for.

I already had a 10 year old and Oscar was very jealous of my oldest daughter so I reluctantly gave him to a couple who already had a monkey but now I live alone except for my cats and dogs.   Anonymous: I don't believe there's been any cases in US of person contracting Hep from Primate according to my research, but I do know herpes is danger to Marmosets and can kill them. Don't know about Macaques and herpes? To A.L : Not arguing with you, but there's an invasive troop of Macaques in FL, so not too sure about Climate requirements considering Snow Macaques deal with frigid temps as well. The idea wild animals cannot be trained is ridiculous. Monkeys are trained to do bunch of stuff, go look at "Helping Hands." They are intelligent, and by just watching You Tube you can see they're trainable. Their own mothers must train them during weaning!? I've heard of them biting but not automatically upon pueberty, usually when something taken away. And ok only poop flingers I've seen are in zoos. I thought that's why you put outer diaper cover on. It’s inevitable. 4. 90% of primate owners fail in the first 5 years. What makes you believe you have more time, money, patience, health, and lifestyle flexibility than most people? The odds are not in your favor. 5. BREEDERS ARE FOR PROFIT. They don’t care how much “love” you have. They don’t want the chore of selling your old car. Frankly, if you can’t afford the monkey, you can’t afford the enclosures, diet, vet appointments, toys, etc and you’re going to end up another piece of white trash on the news showing a half dead monkey rescued from a bird cage after it was fed nothing but candy and McDonalds for 10 years, OR the monkey will get away or snap and bite off your fingers then end up being shot.

  No, macaques aren't illegal to own as "anonymous" stated. There used to be a breeder but she stopped about 6 years ago when she received counterfeit money for two baby macaques. She claimed that the whole situation made her aware of how traumatic it is for both mother and baby monkey when separated so early. She now solicits adoption fees to help fund rehabilitation facilities. Vervet and green monkeys are actually in the very same family as macaques, so to speak. Not just old world monkeys either, I mean considered in the same genus or whatever. Any monkey can contact a zoonotic disease and spread it to a human but yes, the fact that macaques aren't bred in captivity, which is a cruel life really for any monkey, baby or mother, is why they're more likely to carry human/animal communicable diseases. I get that they're cute and I wish I could have one too but no one thinks about them becoming adults. They're no longer cute and still a lot of work. Pet monkeys are also a lifelong commitment as they live 40+ years in captivity. They're not like a cat or a dog that you can just leave at home when you go to work either. They need constant care and supervision. That's 24/7 people. There are strict diet regimens that must be followed which means no human food as they're extremely susceptible to diabetes. Let's not forget diapers which they'll likely eventually tire of wearing and begin to just fling their poo wherever, as nature intended. Essentially, they're not much different from human children except the fact that they're nearly impossible to train, again because they're wild animals. They also need adequate indoor and outdoor enclosures with ever changing enrichment or they get bored and destroy your belongings and bite. Why? Because they're wild animals that have been taken into homes and caged. A lot of breeds do best when there's more than one and that doesn't mean you can get 3 different breeds. There's like two sanctuaries maybe that take monkeys in the US and they rarely have the room if I remember correctly. So, it's not like you have an option to just change your mind one day and release it into the wild because guess what? Even if a human raised monkey somehow managed to retain enough of it's wild instincts to somehow survive in the wild, monkeys aren't indigenous to North America. No wild to release them into. Oh, and super freaking good luck finding a veterinarian with anywhere near the skills and knowledge necessary to treat any illnesses your monkey might end up with. It's just trial and error so far as I know. Seriously, get a pet that's been domesticated and stop this horrible monkey selling all together.

  Actually there are a few states that don't specifically exclude macaques, however it is still extremely difficult to get one in US because they cannot be shipped here and the only breeders are for the lab industry. New World Monkeys are much easier as you see, they have the prehensile tails and outward nostrils. There is just no dourve of old world monkeus of any kind on the western hemisphere. There is a wild invasive group of macaques in Florida. Your best bet is to offer the lab breeders alot of money. otherwise meet an Asian person over internet with poaching skills, fly him over, have him poach you one from Fla (he will have to kill at least its mom if not others around it). Then have a vet control all its many zoonotic diseases herpes, hep B etc macaques get ppl sick. Alternatively Baby green monkeys or vervets have a similar cute face to macaques when young if you like the macaque look. They are old world too but you may have better luck one is advertised here.

  To all you people looking for macaques, they are illegal to own in ALL 50 STATES. It is also illegal to import them and to breed them. Which is why you will NEVER find them for sale anywhere. If you want one, move to Asia.
