Coyotes

Coyotes are built for endurance hunting. They may be slower than the prey they are chasing over short distances but they have superior endurance over long distances. They can travel up to 10 miles each day looking for food. You will find them in hunting packs that will help the coyote to have an advantage when hunting deer and other larger animals. Coyotes are omnivorous in nature, they eat both plants and meat. Coyotes can weigh from 20-50 lbs.

Housing a coyote

The best cage design for coyotes is one that is circular. A cage with corners will give a spot for one coyote to aggressively corner another. Also they will try to climb and jump in corners. The coyote is a climber and can climb a chain-linked fence. You will need to have an enclosed top or an overhanging climb barrier that is a chain-linked section that is about 3 feet wide and is set at an inward and upward angle of 40 degree. They will try to dig out so you will need to lay wire horizontally about 1 foot underground and 3 feet out to prevent them from escaping.

For housing outdoors in the winter you will need to have available for them to access is a dry sheltered area that will protect them from rain, wind, sun and extreme cold. A shelter area should be provided for each coyote. Straw should be spread on the floor of the shelter to provide a dry bedding that can be easily cleaned. You can use a heated water bowl to provide clean drinking water at all times.

For housing outdoors in the summer you will need to provide shade for each coyote so they can get out of the summer heat. You can also provide a shallow pond or pool for them to cool down in when needed. Make sure the water level is safe for small pups if any are present. They will also need to have access to clean cool drinking water at all times.

Coyotes in captivity can be fed a base diet of a high quality dry dog food along with fruits, vegetables and whole mice, rats quail and day old chicks. Raw meat, bones and whole or partial carcasses can be feed periodically. Clean water needs to be provided at all times for drinking.

Vaccinations that you should have administered is for rabies, parvo virus, canine distemper, leptospirosis and corona virus.

Canadian Dog Lover here, and I saw this comment section, and wanted to kinda settle the tensions. Yes, Coyotes are wild animals, and wouldn't make great pets. That's what you think. But there are always going to be people that hear that and say "So there's a chance it could work out". Hell, I think it would be cool even. Bottom Line: If you don't think it's okay, Keep the opinion to yourself, unless it's directly interfering with your life, like if someone's pet Coyote attacked you or someone you know. Aside from that, if you want to own a Coyote, check your local laws, or if you need a permit. THESE ARE NOT NORMAL DOGS, AND THEY WILL REQUIRE NOT NORMAL TREATMENT. It WILL work out just fine, if you know what to do. If you know how Coyotes work, and what their needs call for, and you can apply them, they will be a great dog. Any dog can be a great dog, from a Poodle to a Wolf. It all depends on just how much training and work you put in. If you socialize the Coyote from a puppy around other Domestic Dogs, there's a chance the Coyote could drop its normal instinct for that of what it learns from other dogs. That would be your best chance. Hope everyone learned something from this!!! Let's try to keep a happy comment section here!! If you disagree with the idea of Coyotes ad pets, please keep it to yourself. The people breeding these animals are trying to feed their families, and it works for them. Money is what pays the bills and fills the fridge, right? Again, harsh comments, keep to yourself.

Calling someone ‘puke face’ is as ignorant as one can be. Just because someone has a differing opinion does not mean they’re wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Humans are animals and if that’s how you treat other humans you don’t have the insight or compassion to have an animal in your charge.

Coyotes are very good animals. If they are trained as puppy’s and you teach them to not eat people, there perfectly fine! Leave them alone. I have one myself,so currently live in the country with lots of land. My parents always come over and my coyote thunder is perfectly fine with them! Just train and work with them. For a snack or treat just give them raw steak meat and they are will be ok.

All domestic animals were wild once. & see Shrive Stockton's Daily Coyote & J. Frank Dobie's Song of the Coyote. Attitude is more important than expertise, though the latter is certainly desireable.

Coyote are wild animals but at the same time most pet were. I don’t agree with just anyone taking in an wild animal with no experience but you treat any animal like you’re their mother they will obey and as pups you need to treat them as you are the alpha, they will more than likely be the most loyal pet you could have

How do you think we have domestic dogs today?? I'll tell you why, BY CATCHING WOLVES/COYOTES AND BREEDING THEM.

Mary Dorazio, you’re here on a site dedicated to exotic pets. Complaining about their existence and repeating the tired and ignorant old “wild animals should be wild” dogma isn’t going to go over well on here. Besides, there’s nothing wrong with keeping a coyote or coydog if you have the means to take care of them properly and have done your research before acquiring one. There’s nothing special about a coyote that prohibits them from doing well in captivity with the proper care. Their mental and physical needs aren’t impossible to meet. The only issue with them are the laws surrounding coyote ownership. Coydogs and pure coyotes are even less commonly legal than wolfdogs. You often need difficult to obtain licensing in order to keep one legally. This severely limits their ownership and ensures that only those who are dedicated enough to be right for a coyote can get one. Or the person must be a zoo or educator in places where keeping coyotes as pets is illegal.

Coyotes are wild animals how dare you keep them! I only keep domesticated animals like lizards, tarantulas, parrots, saltwater and freshwater fish, snakes, and other reptiles.

A friend of mine has a half-coyote half-pit-bull dog. It is easily one of the most beautiful, gentle, intelligent and well-trained dogs I have ever seen. Go figure. He's solid black with a short coat and looks like a tiny Egyptian Anubis. His breeding was an accident as my friend's son left his pitbull female outside where she was bred to a wild coyote. After the pups came, and found to be absolutely wonderful, everyone was like "can you do that again, because I want one!" I personally think that coyotes, like any other canine, can be domesticated with proper training. They are just wild dogs.

What the heck are these comments? Puke face? Really? People can have their opinions, and mine is: Coyotes are wild animals and should NOT be kept as pets unless you are an expert on their behavior. So, if you want to get a Coyote, maybe you should do more research and think about everything that could go wrong.

To Mary Dorazio: You are an ill informed lady. I had a 1/2 Coyote, Corgi, Blue Healer, for 14 years. Got him off of the Rez, in 🇨🇦 Gussy was the best friend you could ever have. I would have another, over a domestic dog any day. So, puke face, shut your pie hole! You know nothing! Perhaps you should get one. The poor guy, would probably run away, from someone that “knows it all! “ you’d scare him away! Cheers from 🇨🇦
